It's a mystery to me....

Does anyone know why Bonnie's eyes are BLUE when I use the flash...

....but Puffers glow red? Normally CUJO red...but he's got a bit of cataracts now.
I thought all dogs had red eye? But I've noticed other photos of terrier type dogs that glow blue too. Anybody know?

Hmmmmm....
Brutus' eyes go blue in the flash, but my JR terrier's go green. The color just comes from the flash reflecting off the retina (back of the eye). I'd think a dog retina is a dog retina. Maybe the difference comes from the shape/size/prominence of the eyes, as that certainly varies breed to breed... Interested to see what other comments you get!

We were told it was to do with the reflection from the dogs lens.

I don't need Dr. Science to tell me that Puffer looks totally freaky with those glowing eyes. Who knows why they are that color, but yikes!

If you use the "red eye correction" or back lighting you can quash the glow...

Of course, sometimes it is nice to have glowey eyes!

I work for an opthalmologist and we had this discussion at work the other day. It is something in the dogs eye that helps with their night vision and is reflective. As with humans, there are variances in the color of their retinas. Here is a detailed article on Wikipedia that explains it much better
